Never did "Standing Room
Only" mean as much to SRO general manager Greg Smith than on
Jan. 4, 2006. On that evening, as a hometown kid named Vince
Young willed the Texas Longhorns to a 41-38 win over USC in
the BCS Championship Game, the giant sports bar and café (capacity
650) at Northwest Mall was literally overflowing with fanatics
clad in burnt orange.
"We literally had to stop letting people in that night," recalls
Smith, the manager of eight years.
That doesn't come as much of a surprise to those who frequent
the site. With 100 TVs spread across 18,000 square feet and
affiliations with 30 alumni groups from campuses nationwide
- not to mention some of the best crawfish around - SRO provides
arguably the best atmosphere in Houston for watching a game.
As many as eight different sporting events can be simultaneously
broadcast on big screens with sound included. And each viewing
screen wasn't thrown in haphazardly - Smith researched their
placement himself.
"A lot of the other bars I've visited didn't pay enough attention
to sight lines," he said. "Somebody could be sitting there with
his neck turned sideways for the whole game. Here you can comfortably
watch the game from anywhere in the bar."
SRO even decorates the bar in team colors if one of its alumni
associations - Florida State, Auburn and Nebraska are a few
examples - has a big game day. During the Ohio State-Florida
title game in January, the pre-game chants and songs coming
from opposite ends of the facility often drowned out the broadcast
volume.
The bar serves 9-10 beers on tap and includes a stage for live
music and karaoke nights. SRO also has pool, darts, foosball
and three nights of poker each week to keep occupants satisfied.
And if a game is on, that won't be a problem.
"I really think it is the best sports bar around," Smith said.
"We concentrate on getting as many events as possible.
